Nonprofit Strategic Restructuring Initiative
The Dyson Foundation’s Strategic Restructuring Initiative funds Mid-Hudson Valley organizations interested in exploring, planning, or integrating a formal relationship between two or more government entities or independent organizations. Opportunities and motivations for restructuring include competition from similar organizations, executive transition, geographic or program expansion opportunities, and significant shifts in the service delivery and/or funding environment.
Organizational restructuring may include sharing, transferring, or combining services, programs, or resources, through formal effectuation of collaborations, shared services, subsidiary relationships, or merger with the goal of expanding and enhancing programs and services, improving effectiveness and efficiency, reducing duplicated services, or to improve financial stability. Learn more about organizational restructuring by visiting Resources.
Preliminary Exploration:
Grants of up to $10,000 to explore the possibility of entering into the restructuring process. Funds may be used to conduct an organizational assessment, research possible nonprofit partners or collaborators, facilitate initial discussions with potential organizational partners, and support exploration of and visits to another organization that represents a particular restructured model of interest.
Planning:
Grants of up to $30,000 to a collaborative of two or more organizations that have agreed to enter into the strategic restructuring process. Funds may be used to develop the restructuring plan, facilitate meetings between executive staff and/or board members of collaborating organizations, undertake the due diligence process (including examination of the financial, human resource, legal, and regulatory ramifications of restructuring), and complete related legal filings.
Integration:
Grants of up to $35,000 to implement the strategic restructuring of two or more organizations. Funds may be used to move or close offices; support human resource costs related to the hiring, retention, or retraining of staff; integrate technology or fiscal systems; and develop marketing materials for the restructured entity.
Post-Restructuring Support:
Grants towards the general operations of a single organization or a group of organizations that have undergone strategic restructuring in the previous 12 months. Grant amounts are based on the nature and size of the restructured entity or program, its overall financial sustainability, and alignment with the Foundation’s funding priorities.
Strategic Restructuring Initiative Criteria
- Although there is no requirement for an organization to go through each stage of the process, the Dyson Foundation will not fund out of sequence. For example, the Foundation will not fund an organization’s preliminary exploration request after funding its planning request.
- Strategic Restructuring Initiative funding is not available to organizations with an annual operating budget of over $20 million.
