In Flight, Inc. / Special Needs Program, Inc.

In Flight, Inc. and a similar provider, Special Needs Program, Inc. merged in 2013 to continue to provide services for people with developmental disabilities in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, and Ulster counties. Services include residential habilitation, day habilitation, and at-home services, with the goal of integrating individuals with developmental disabilities within their communities, and to encourage and develop individualized outcomes.

Prior to the merger, In Flight and Special Needs Program each had annual operating budgets of approximately $5 million. New York State’s Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) continues to actively encourage smaller contracting agencies to merge for efficiency as OPWDD updates its licensing, funding, and oversight procedures.

In 2010, the Dyson Foundation provided a mini-grant to In Flight for strategic planning. In 2014, In Flight and Special Needs Program received a grant to facilitate the merger. In 2015, In Flight received another grant toward the remaining implementation costs of the merger, to standardize and enhance the equipment for offices in Red Hook and Ghent.

Dyson Foundation supports a four-stage Strategic Restructuring Initiative, which falls under the Management Assistance Program and the funding theme of Nonprofit Strength. The Foundation continues to encourage nonprofits in the region that are in states of transition, experiencing financial difficulty, or providing similar services to apply for grants to explore, plan, and implement mergers when appropriate.
