Boys and Girls Club of Newburgh
The Boys & Girls Club of Newburgh (BGCN) assists hundreds of youth each year in reaching their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
The BGCN received a significant multi-year grant toward its general operations from the Dyson Foundation. Its largest area of programming focuses on out-of-school time, including after-school and summer programs for some 750 children grades K-12 at four different locations. Five days per week, students receive homework help, tutoring, academic enrichment, and more. Students in grades 3 to 8 can receive formal leadership and service learning mentoring, while high school students are eligible to receive tutoring, SAT prep, college tours, and support around college applications, scholarships, and financial aid. BGCN’s summer programming serves more than 350 students, blending recreation and academic enrichment at low or no cost for nearly all students.
The Dyson Foundation’s grants to the BGCN, both in general operating support and management technical assistance, are illustrative of the Foundation’s interest in improving academic success in area youth via the funding themes of Enhancing Education and Nonprofit Strength. The Foundation aligns with the increasing trend and best practice of providing general operating support to well-run nonprofits.
